The Gujarat government has announced a comprehensive relief package for residents, traders, and businesses impacted by recent floods in Surat. The measures, expected to cost around Rs 550 crore over three years, were approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Torrential rains from July 6 led to extensive flooding in residential, commercial, and industrial areas of Surat, with the city receiving approximately 20 inches of rainfall in just two days.
Thousands of individuals were evacuated from low-lying areas, schools were closed, and relief operations continued for several days. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi highlighted that cash dole and household assistance have been distributed to over 19,000 citizens, with additional support provided to those affected by flooding. The government has also initiated direct financial aid for commercial establishments impacted by the floods, offering assistance ranging from Rs 7,500 to Rs one lakh.
In a bid to support traders, the government introduced an interest subsidy scheme for GST-registered traders operating permanent shops. This scheme will cover seven per cent interest on business loans for three years, with varying loan amounts and interest support based on annual turnover. Sanghavi emphasized the importance of assisting affected individuals and businesses in restarting their livelihoods, with a focus on providing timely and efficient aid to those in need.
Restoration efforts are underway in Surat following the receding of floodwaters, with the state government prioritizing the restoration of civic services, sanitation drives, disease prevention measures, and financial assistance for affected families. Sanghavi assured that the relief package was formulated based on field assessments and surveys, with detailed sector-wise assessments to be released upon completion of the survey exercise.
