The Gujarat government has issued a stern warning to fertiliser, seed, and pesticide dealers regarding the sale of substandard agricultural products, hoarding essential goods, and other activities detrimental to farmers. State Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards those engaging in the distribution of illegal or low-quality agricultural inputs. The government, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is dedicated to ensuring farmers receive high-quality fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides in sufficient quantities.
Vaghani highlighted that the quality and distribution of agricultural inputs are regulated by the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and any violations will face severe repercussions. The government has instructed the Agriculture Department to take stringent legal actions against offenders, including the possibility of police complaints and license cancellations. Additionally, measures under the Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, will be enforced against those involved in criminal activities related to agricultural inputs.
Amidst a comprehensive inspection drive by the Agriculture Department, 85 vigilance teams have conducted assessments of manufacturers and dealers of agricultural products. Notably, 54 licenses, including those for fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides, have been immediately suspended due to irregularities. The government has also initiated police complaints against individuals for serious violations, ensuring strict enforcement of regulations to safeguard farmers’ interests and prevent economic losses in the agricultural sector.
