The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to extending the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC)’s North-South Corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur in Ahmedabad. This move aims to bolster connectivity between the city and the state’s financial center. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has lauded the decision, emphasizing that this extension will improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, benefiting various sectors directly.
The 3.33-kilometer extension will include three elevated stations and is slated for completion within the next four years. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,067.35 crore. GIFT City, a global fintech hub established under Prime Minister Modi’s vision, is set to gain further recognition through this metro extension.
Designed to provide easier access to the city for employees of multinational corporations, educational institutions, commercial establishments, and residents commuting from Ahmedabad, the metro extension is a significant development. Currently, Ahmedabad Metro spans 68.28 kilometers across Phase I and Phase II, with Phase I operational since September 2022, covering the APMC to Motera Stadium North-South Corridor and Thaltej Village to Vastral Village East-West Corridor.
Phase II, operational since January 2026, extends from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and from GNLU to GIFT City. These phases encompass 53 stations and cater to an estimated 1.6 lakh passengers daily. With the new extension, GMRC aims to further integrate GIFT City into Ahmedabad’s urban transport network.
The three elevated stations along the extended route are expected to serve both commercial and residential commuters, offering a convenient and efficient travel option for daily commuters. This project signifies the state’s continuous efforts to expand Ahmedabad’s metro network, supporting the city’s rapid urban development in preparation for major global events like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the aspirational 2036 Olympic Games. The state government and local administration are also focusing on sustainable transport, with plans to operate 3,000 electric buses across the city.
