Ahmedabad, Aug 8 (IANS) The Ahmedabad Police seized 5,050 bottles of prohibited cough syrup worth Rs 59.41 lakh during a night-long checking operation across the city, with the consignment recovered from parcels at the General Post Office on Relief Road, officials said on Saturday.
The seizure was made by the city police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) between 11 p.m. on August 7 and 5 a.m. on August 8 as part of an intensive night-round operation ordered to strengthen security and curb criminal activities.
The police said the cough syrup was among three cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during the operation.
In another case, the SOG arrested one person from the Vatva area after allegedly recovering 216 grams of ganja valued at Rs 10,800. Other items seized in the case took the total value of the recovered property to Rs 13,970.
The Crime Branch separately arrested two people from Narol with 350 grams of ganja valued at Rs 17,500. Across the city, police checked 6,560 vehicles during the night round.
A total of 80 vehicles were detained under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act for being driven without the required documents or insurance, while illegally fitted black films were removed from 179 vehicles.
Police also registered 19 cases under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act against motorists accused of driving after consuming alcohol.
The operation also resulted in one case under the Gambling Act and six cases for violation of a notification under Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act. Eight cases were registered for violating the weapons prohibition notification under Section 135(1) of the Act.
Under the prohibition law, police registered 10 cases and seized 38 bottles of foreign liquor valued at Rs 30,535. Other property seized in these cases was valued at Rs 70,536, while six litres of country-made liquor worth Rs 1,200 was also recovered.
Police additionally registered eight cases against people found to have consumed alcohol. As part of the checks, police also visited and checked paan parlours and small shops in the city.
The force said members of the public were advised to follow traffic and other legal rules and to take precautions for their own safety and that of others.
Police also checked 118 history-sheeters and MCR-listed people living in different parts of Ahmedabad who had previously been involved in criminal cases.
During vehicle checking at Picnic House, Riverfront East police found a 21-year-old man who had gone there intending to attempt suicide.
Police said questioning revealed that he was depressed and had left with the intention of ending his life. The officers counselled him, called his family members and handed him over to them safely.
The night-round operation was conducted under the leadership of the Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, with two DCPs, one ACP, 10 police inspectors, seven police sub-inspectors and around 2,000 police personnel taking part.
