Gujarat Police observed the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ with public awareness events in Ahmedabad and Surat. In Ahmedabad, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force organized a cyclothon at the Sabarmati Riverfront to raise awareness against drug abuse. The event, flagged off by Director General of Police G.S. Malik, aimed to highlight the challenges posed by narcotics globally.
In Surat, the city police conducted a public awareness rally involving senior officers, students, residents, NGOs, and media personnel. The rally focused on educating the public about the risks of drug abuse and promoting community involvement in anti-drug campaigns. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot emphasized the city police’s ongoing commitment to combating narcotics through such initiatives.
The state government’s recent anti-narcotics enforcement efforts were highlighted, revealing over 3,700 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the past five years. During this period, 5,346 individuals were arrested, and more than 1.36 lakh kilograms of narcotic substances worth over Rs 13,600 crore were seized. Gujarat has also enhanced its anti-drug measures through specialized forces, technology-driven investigations, and support for de-addiction and rehabilitation programs.
