Gujarat is enhancing its biosecurity by constructing its first Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory, a secure facility for handling highly infectious pathogens. This advanced complex will focus on developing vaccines, diagnostics, and research for severe viruses without current treatments. The move follows recent outbreaks of animal-to-human diseases, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
The state faced challenges during the pandemic due to the reliance on Pune’s sole BSL-4 lab for testing and analysis. Gujarat has encountered cases of Chandipura virus and Lumpy Skin Disease, necessitating BSL-3 or higher facilities. The rising threat of diseases like Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever has underscored the urgent need for another high-level containment lab.
The upcoming BSL-4 and Animal BSL-4 (ABSL-4) lab, developed by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) in Gandhinagar, will cover 14.21 acres. It will feature various labs, systems for waste management, and protective measures like airtight environments and decontamination systems. These precautions will prevent pathogen leaks and enhance Gujarat’s response to outbreaks.
Once operational, the lab will facilitate pathogen research, testing, and vaccine development, reducing reliance on national labs and enabling quicker outbreak responses. It will also aid in monitoring zoonotic diseases and position Gujarat as a key player in biomedical research. This initiative will not only boost the state’s pandemic preparedness but also strengthen national security against bio-threats and bioterrorism risks.
