Indonesia has urged the United Nations to hold an emergency Security Council meeting following the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono made the request to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasizing the importance of a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation into the incident. Sugiono also spoke with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji to express Indonesia’s deep concern over the attacks and to pledge close cooperation in responding to the situation and maintaining regional stability.
Two more Indonesian peacekeepers serving in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force were confirmed dead, bringing the total to three fatalities. The soldiers were part of the Indonesian contingent deployed in Lebanon. Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait from Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence’s Information Bureau reported that two soldiers died, and two others were seriously injured in the incident. The injured soldiers are receiving medical treatment in Beirut.
The deaths occurred when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle in southern Lebanon. This incident marked the second fatal event within 24 hours involving Indonesian peacekeepers in the region. The UNIFIL also confirmed the soldiers’ deaths and emphasized the tragic loss in the pursuit of peace. The recent fatalities followed an attack in southern Lebanon where Indonesian peacekeepers were caught amid ongoing conflict, resulting in casualties.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the incident, urging all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and ensure the safety of UN personnel and property. Indonesia reiterated its condemnation of the attacks and stressed the necessity of protecting UN peacekeepers in compliance with international laws.
