Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia announced plans for a Mega Greenfield Shipbuilding Park in Kuchhdi, Porbandar, alongside the launch of the ‘Gujarat Shipbuilding and Repair Policy 2026’. This initiative aims to boost employment opportunities and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the maritime sector. The project is expected to significantly benefit Gujarat’s economy and the coastal district of Porbandar.
Modhwadia expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Porbandar MP and Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for their support in approving the Mega Greenfield Shipbuilding Park. The state’s shipbuilding policy aligns with the national maritime strategy outlined in ‘Maritime Vision India 2047’, enhancing Gujarat’s standing in the shipping and logistics industry. Currently, Gujarat holds a substantial 42% share of India’s maritime logistics sector.
The proposed maritime industrial ecosystem at Kuchhdi is set to attract investments totaling approximately Rs 27,000 crore. This includes funds for marine and land-based infrastructure as well as private investments for shipyards and associated industries. The project is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities for local youth, technicians, and skilled workers in Porbandar and neighboring regions. Additionally, it will foster the growth of MSMEs and marine equipment manufacturing clusters in the area.
The Mega Greenfield Shipbuilding Park at Porbandar is expected to revolutionize employment and the MSME sector in Gujarat. It will feature two to three large shipyards, complemented by ancillary industries, logistics facilities, testing centers, skill development institutions, and research facilities. This initiative forms part of Gujarat’s broader strategy to expand shipbuilding capacity, establish integrated maritime industrial parks, and bolster domestic manufacturing.
