Gujarat has achieved the top ranking in the “States with Most Improvement” category for 2025 under the Tuberculosis (TB)-Free India Campaign. State government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani announced this after a state Cabinet meeting, highlighting Gujarat’s significant reduction in TB cases and deaths over recent years.
During the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Vaghani emphasized that Gujarat’s performance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s TB-Free India Campaign was reviewed. According to the latest report from the Central government, Gujarat saw a 34% decrease in new tuberculosis cases and a 37% drop in the TB mortality rate in 2023 compared to 2015.
Acknowledging Gujarat’s remarkable progress, Vaghani stated that the state secured the first position nationally in the ‘States with Most Improvement’ category for 2025. The report also revealed that Gujarat’s estimated incidence of new TB cases in 2024 was 186 per one lakh population, ranking the state sixth among those with the lowest tuberculosis burden in the country and fourth among the large states.
In the current year, Gujarat identified 57,334 tuberculosis patients between January and May 2026, achieving 98.3% of the Central government’s target of 58,333. Of these patients, 91% became disease-free within a short period, totaling 50,928 individuals. Additionally, under the “TB-Free India Campaign – 100-Day Campaign,” Gujarat conducted door-to-door tuberculosis surveillance in 5,012 high-risk villages, screening 23.38 lakh people for tuberculosis and diagnosing 32,377 new TB patients.
