A gunman who opened fire near the White House on Saturday evening was shot dead by Secret Service officers after an exchange of gunfire close to the executive complex. A bystander was also struck during the shooting, while President Donald Trump was unharmed inside the White House. In a statement, Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi revealed that the individual pulled a weapon from his bag and started firing near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the exchange.
Officials did not disclose the suspect’s identity or motive behind the shooting. The condition of the injured bystander was not immediately provided by the Secret Service, although reports indicated the person was in critical condition. President Trump was present at the White House during the shooting, but operations were not affected.
The White House complex was briefly locked down as armed Secret Service personnel secured the area. Journalists and staff were quickly ushered into the press briefing room for safety.
