A shooting incident, possibly linked to gang rivalry, occurred near the Department of Botany at Panjab University in Chandigarh, raising security concerns on campus. Two unidentified individuals on a two-wheeler fired gunshots in the air near the Department of Botany before fleeing towards the Punjab border area. The suspects were captured on CCTV snatching a motorcycle at gunpoint.

The gunshots were believed to be aimed at intimidating a student leader associated with the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) during the ongoing student festival, Jhankaar. The police recovered two shells from the scene and are investigating the incident, which involved a former SOPU secretary candidate, Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda. Jawanda, previously linked to the Students Organisation of India (SOI), leads a faction within SOPU.

Following the shooting, tension mounted on campus as students gathered at the site, prompting police and forensic teams to launch investigations. Various student and political groups criticized the university for alleged security lapses, especially amidst ongoing events. The university authorities assured a thorough investigation and emphasized their commitment to maintaining campus safety.
