A businessman from Guwahati, Gautam Baruah, was taken into custody by Assam Police for hosting a birthday party on the newly opened Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu. The celebration, which gained attention on social media, featured a festive setup on the bridge for his wife’s birthday, including a red carpet and parked vehicles. The incident raised concerns among the public regarding the misuse of public infrastructure for private events.
The videos of the event circulating online led to public outrage, with many questioning the appropriateness of using a public roadway for personal celebrations. Netizens expressed worries about potential traffic disturbances and highlighted enforcement issues. The celebration reportedly caused inconvenience to commuters and disrupted traffic flow on the vital bridge, impacting regional connectivity.
In response to the viral footage and public criticism, authorities initiated an investigation and filed a case against Baruah. Two vehicles allegedly linked to the celebration were confiscated by the police, identified with registration numbers AS01GH0003 and AS01GK0772. Baruah was detained for interrogation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the event and whether proper permissions were obtained for utilizing the flyover.
