Rajya Sabha member and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh expressed worry about the rise of inappropriate content on social media platforms, emphasizing its negative effects on teenagers. He highlighted the need for stricter regulations and stronger laws to address this issue. Singh pointed out that while social media has its benefits in communication and knowledge sharing, its misuse poses a serious threat, especially with platforms like Instagram being misused for content resembling soft pornography.
In today’s digital age, Singh noted that explicit material is easily accessible, with even young children as old as 12 or 13 being exposed to such content with a simple click. He raised concerns about the detrimental impact such exposure can have on the mental and moral development of youngsters. Singh described the situation as grave, extending beyond technical or legal aspects to impact society, morality, and the future of the youth in the country.
Singh emphasized the gravity of the issue, stating that the proliferation of pornographic material through social media could distort children’s perceptions of relationships and respect, particularly towards women. He warned that the unregulated circulation of such content could erode the social fabric of the nation and influence the behavior and attitudes of young individuals. Singh stressed the importance of utilizing social media platforms for educational and creative purposes rather than spreading harmful or obscene material.
Calling for decisive action, Singh advocated for stringent measures to block pornographic websites and regulate objectionable content online. He highlighted the necessity for enhanced monitoring mechanisms, age verification systems, and severe penalties for violators. While acknowledging the significance of freedom of expression in a democracy, Singh underscored the need to safeguard children from harmful content and prevent adverse societal impacts resulting from its dissemination.
