The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted heavy rain and strong winds in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday due to multiple atmospheric circulations in the region. Cyclonic circulations are active over north Tamil Nadu, the southeast Arabian Sea, and the central east-southeast Bay of Bengal, as per the weather department. These weather systems are expected to bring widespread rainfall across the state in the next two days.
Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are likely in districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Theni on Thursday. Additionally, the weather department has cautioned about strong surface winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in districts such as Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Erode. The unstable weather conditions may cause disruptions in normal life, particularly in hilly and western districts experiencing intense rain spells.
The forecast suggests that rainfall will persist on Friday in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Ranipet districts. However, while some areas face rainy conditions, the northern interior of Tamil Nadu is expected to see a rise in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius on Friday, leading to increased heat discomfort levels.
In Chennai and its suburbs, partly cloudy skies are expected with potential heat-related discomfort during the day. The maximum temperature in the city may reach around 40 degrees Celsius, creating humid and oppressive conditions despite cloud cover. The meteorological department has also warned fishermen against going to sea due to the possibility of squally weather along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and parts of the central Bay of Bengal. Coastal residents and fishing communities are advised to stay cautious and monitor official weather updates closely as rough sea conditions are anticipated in the next 24 hours.
