Heavy rainfall persists in Kerala as the monsoon strengthens, leading to the first red alert of the season issued by the India Meteorological Department for five northern districts. Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under the red alert on Saturday, with three districts expected to remain on alert on Sunday as well. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Pathanamthitta districts, while Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram are under a yellow alert.
The ongoing monsoon has already caused rain-related incidents in various parts of Kerala. Kozhikode city experienced strong winds in the morning, resulting in the uprooting of trees in multiple locations. Authorities have issued a detailed safety advisory in response to the deteriorating weather conditions.
Residents in landslide, mudslide, and flash flood-prone areas in hilly regions have been advised to relocate to safer places during the daytime. Those living in low-lying areas susceptible to waterlogging have also been urged to move to relief camps if necessary. Furthermore, the public has been cautioned against engaging in activities like swimming, fishing, or crossing rivers and water bodies during heavy rainfall.
Travel to waterfalls, tourist spots, water bodies, and hilly regions should be avoided until the weather conditions improve. The Central Water Commission has advised individuals residing near riverbanks to stay vigilant. Authorities have also warned against traveling on roads close to water bodies and areas at risk of falling trees and electric line hazards. Emergency assistance is available through 24-hour control rooms, with individuals able to seek help by contacting 1077 and 1070.
The onset of the monsoon in Kerala signifies the commencement of India’s crucial four-month rainy season. The progression of the monsoon significantly impacts agriculture, rural incomes, food prices, and economic activities. Given that approximately 51% of cultivated land relies on rainfall, the intensity and distribution of monsoon rains play a pivotal role in India’s economy and growth.
