Districts in south Bengal are forecasted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days as a low-pressure system looms over the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore area has indicated that this low pressure is likely to intensify into a depression, leading to significant rainfall in South Bengal, including Kolkata, starting from Saturday. Until then, scattered showers will persist in Kolkata and neighboring districts.
In contrast, districts in north Bengal have already been hit hard by heavy rainfall until Tuesday, causing landslides and flooding in certain areas and disrupting normal life. As the weather conditions improve in the north, attention is now shifting to south Bengal, where heavy rain is anticipated. An official from the RMC highlighted that a cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal and adjacent south Bangladesh is expected to result in a low-pressure area forming in the northwest Bay of Bengal by July 3. The southwest monsoon axis stretching from Punjab to the north Bay of Bengal, combined with conducive conditions for rain, including thunderstorms fueled by an influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal, will sustain the rainy spell across various districts of the state in the coming days.
While three districts in north Bengal, namely Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, may witness heavy rain on Wednesday, the remaining districts could experience rain accompanied by gusty winds of 30 to 40 km per hour and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain will intermittently persist in the districts of South Bengal, with the rainfall intensity expected to escalate from Saturday onwards. Sunday might bring heavy to very heavy rain to Kolkata and districts like South 24 Parganas, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Bankura, and Purulia. The Met office has also issued warnings of very heavy rainfall in West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura districts on Monday.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata and its environs reached 31.2 degrees Celsius, exceeding the normal temperature by 1.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.9 degrees Celsius, 1 degree Celsius below the usual mark.
