The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Alipore has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in south Bengal districts, including Kolkata, until Monday. This forecast is due to a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal expected to develop into a depression. The system’s movement towards the west and northwest is likely to bring significant rainfall, leading to rough seas in the north Bay of Bengal and a caution for fishermen to avoid venturing out until Monday.
Scattered heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of south Bengal on Saturday, particularly in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts. Across all south Bengal districts, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph is expected. An orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued for South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, while a yellow alert is in place for other districts like Jhargram, West Midnapore, Howrah, and more.
On Monday, yellow alerts for heavy rainfall will persist in several districts of south Bengal. Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely in specific areas of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore on Tuesday and Wednesday. In contrast, North Bengal is not expected to experience significant rainfall until Monday, although a yellow alert for light to moderate rain and lightning remains in effect for all districts in the region.
Kolkata saw a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, slightly above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.7 degrees Celsius, typical for the season.
