Heavy rainfall persists in various parts of Odisha as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The depression, originating from a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent regions of North Odisha-West Bengal coasts, is currently situated about 170 km east of Chandbali and 180 km east-southeast of Balasore in Odisha.
The IMD forecasts that the depression is likely to move northwestwards, further intensifying into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. It is expected to cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around forenoon/noon of July 27, 2026. The weather agency has issued a red warning for several districts in Odisha, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places.
Moreover, the IMD has cautioned about extremely heavy rainfall in specific areas of Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Anugola, and Dhenkanal districts until Monday morning. Sundargarh, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj districts are also expected to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. Additionally, the IMD has alerted several other districts in the state to prepare for heavy rainfall over the next five to seven days.
The agency has highlighted the potential consequences of the heavy rainfall, including localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, temporary closure of underpasses, especially in urban regions, and flooding in certain river basins. The continuous downpour has left many families stranded in low-lying areas of the state, with reports of crop damage causing distress to farmers.
