Heavy rainfall in Assam’s Barak Valley led to urban flooding in parts of Cachar and Sribhumi districts, affecting thousands of residents. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported flood-like conditions in Silchar town, Badarpur, and Sribhumi Sadar areas due to continuous rain. Three districts, including Cachar, Sribhumi, and Kamrup (Metro), faced waterlogging and flash floods, with the worst impact in southern Assam’s Barak Valley region.

In Silchar town, Cachar district, around 15,617 people were affected as rainwater inundated various localities and municipal wards. Notable areas like Rangirkhari, Ambikapatty, and Shillong Patty were severely impacted. Similarly, in Sribhumi district, approximately 8,002 individuals in Badarpur and Sribhumi Sadar revenue circles faced flooding issues in areas such as Badarpur town and Raghunathpur.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s report highlighted that a total of 23,619 people across the state were affected by urban flooding, with a focus on the Barak Valley districts. Rescue operations were conducted by SDRF personnel in Sribhumi district, where 53 individuals and three animals were evacuated from inundated regions. Fortunately, there were no reported human casualties due to the flooding as of Friday evening.

Authorities observed “urban flash flood” conditions in Badarpur town, Sribhumi district, following the heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in southern Assam in the next 24 hours, urging authorities to stay vigilant.
