Heavy security surrounds former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area, leading to tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The Trinamool Congress alleges the security measures aim to prevent Banerjee from visiting the family of an 11-year-old rape-murder victim in Baruipur, while the BJP states it is for her safety. Police, central security forces, and official vehicles have been stationed outside Banerjee’s residence since Sunday night, raising questions from Trinamool leaders about the necessity of the deployment.
The Trinamool Congress claims the security presence is to obstruct Banerjee from traveling to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, where unrest has grown following the discovery of the minor girl’s body and ensuing violence. Minister Dilip Ghosh mentioned that the security is to protect Banerjee from potential harm while moving in public spaces. Trinamool leader Baiswanor Chatterjee stated that Banerjee was prepared to leave but was stopped by the police deployment and barricades.
The security situation outside Banerjee’s residence unfolded amidst public outrage over the tragic death of the 11-year-old girl, found in a sack in Baruipur’s Surjyapur Haat area a day after she went missing. The incident led to protests in the area, with residents expressing anger through road blockades, setting fires, and damaging police vehicles, demanding swift justice. The situation escalated further when a mob reportedly lynched a man suspected of involvement in the crime. Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the girl’s death and continue their investigation.
