A deadly explosion at an alleged illegal coal mining site in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has prompted the High Court to demand immediate arrests. The blast, which resulted in at least 18 fatalities, raised concerns about the ongoing operation of illegal coal mines in the region. The court, led by Justice H.S. Thangkhiew and Justice W. Diengdoh, highlighted the persistence of illegal mining activities despite previous fatal incidents and court orders.

The court emphasized the need for swift action by the district administration and police to address the issue of illegal coal mining. It instructed officials to apprehend the mine owners, operators, and individuals involved in the illicit mining operations. Additionally, authorities were directed to seize all related equipment, documents, and incriminating materials.

In a bid to provide immediate relief to affected individuals, the High Court urged the district administration to ensure prompt medical assistance and support for those impacted by the explosion. The court also summoned the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills to appear before it on February 9 to report on the actions taken, including arrests and preventive measures against illegal mining.

The court’s strong stance on accountability was evident as it sought explanations from officials on the persistence of prohibited mining activities despite prior incidents and legal restrictions. It warned of stringent measures if concrete steps were not taken to address the issue effectively. The Meghalaya government has initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, emphasizing that those responsible for the tragedy will face legal consequences.
