Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu stated that the state will not proceed with the Kishau and Renuka dams hydropower projects unless neighboring states assure the settlement of long-pending arrears of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Sukhu mentioned positive developments on this matter during the launch of the report ‘Scientific Assessment of Tackling Non-CO2 Emissions: Pathways for Himachal Pradesh’.
He emphasized that Himachal Pradesh’s essence lies in the Himalayas, with its glaciers, rivers, forests, and mountains defining its identity and supporting millions. Any disruption in the Himalayas could have severe consequences not just for the state but for the entire nation. The state is advocating for its rightful dues amid these concerns.
During the event, the government entered two agreements to encourage the cultivation and preservation of medicinal plants. One agreement entails the distribution of 12 lakh saplings annually, totaling 1.20 crore saplings over a decade, to farmers in various regions based on ecological suitability. In the low- and mid-hill areas, species like amla, harad, bahera, kakadshingi, and lodhra will be provided, while in mid- to high-altitude zones, species such as jatamansi, kutaki, and padam kasht will be distributed. Alpine species like atich and vish will be available to farmers in higher reaches.
The second pact focuses on promoting the cultivation, conservation, and value-chain development of six selected medicinal plants in Solan district over five years. These plants include turmeric, ashwagandha, shatavari, tulsi, chirayita, and Himalayan gentian.
