Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu unveiled the “Water Laws of Himachal Pradesh,” a comprehensive compilation by the Jal Shakti Vibhag consolidating key Acts, rules, and policies governing the state’s operations. This compendium aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in managing water supply, sewerage, and irrigation services.
The Chief Minister commended the Jal Shakti Vibhag for assembling legal, technical, and administrative provisions spanning several decades into a single authoritative reference. This initiative is expected to bolster institutional knowledge and aid decision-making for officials across various divisions and zones.
Himachal Pradesh has made significant strides in implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring nearly 100% of households have tap water connections. The state’s dedication to sustainable water management earned it the National Water Award in 2026. The released publication will serve as a comprehensive guide to the department’s legal and procedural framework.
CM Sukhu highlighted that the compendium will empower officials to make well-informed decisions in the field and adhere to statutory regulations. Contractors stand to benefit from clearer guidelines on enlistment norms, tender processes, and financial authorities. Additionally, citizens will gain easier access to information on water tariffs, service guarantees under the Himachal Pradesh Public Services Guarantee Act of 2011, and accredited water quality testing labs.
This initiative is anticipated to bolster governance, enhance service delivery, and foster transparency within the operations of the Jal Shakti Vibhag.
