Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta inaugurated the week-long International Minjar Fair in Chamba, a traditional Hindu fair symbolizing maize blossoming in the historical town on the river Ravi’s banks. The fair commenced with the hoisting of the Minjar flag, representing silk tassels glowing like maize blossoms. Participants wear Minjars on their attire, praying for timely rain and a fruitful harvest, with the embroidery mostly done by Muslims.

Governor Gupta praised the festival as a vibrant representation of Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage, communal harmony, and living traditions. He emphasized the importance of preserving the state’s rich traditions, folk art, and festivals for future generations. The Governor urged the youth to stay connected with their cultural roots and take pride in India’s heritage to strengthen unity and social harmony.

Addressing the issue of drug abuse, Governor Gupta stressed the need for public involvement in raising awareness against drugs to safeguard the youth and create a drug-free Himachal. He commended the efforts of Chamba Police in combating drug abuse and protecting the community. The Governor officially opened the festival by unfurling the Minjar flag and acknowledged Chamba’s traditional crafts like Chamba Rumal, Chamba Chappal, and Chamba Thal, praising artisans for preserving the district’s artistic legacy.

The Minjars Fair, associated with the monsoon season, involves farmers praying for abundant rain for a successful harvest. The fair, dating back to the 10th century, commemorates King Sahila Varma’s victory over the Kangra king, who gifted maize and paddy blossoms to Varma. Another legend tells of a sage’s ‘yajna’ at Champavati temple altering the river’s course, allowing access to the Hari Rai temple across the river. The fair will culminate with the immersion of Minjars in the Ravi River.
