HLL Lifecare Ltd, a Central government Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has introduced Happy Days Earth, a compostable sanitary napkin, to meet the rising demand for sustainable consumer goods. This move places the public sector enterprise at the forefront of India’s sustainable hygiene market, as the product complies with both Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality specifications and compostability requirements under IS/ISO 17088. Manufacturers are increasingly pressured to reduce plastic waste, making eco-friendly alternatives like Happy Days Earth crucial.

Conventional sanitary napkins, primarily composed of polyethylene, polypropylene, and Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP), contribute significantly to plastic pollution by lingering in landfills for centuries. Happy Days–Earth, however, offers a solution without compromising performance. Independent studies have shown over 91% biodegradation within 156 days, meeting composting standards. Unlike traditional napkins, it decomposes into harmless natural byproducts like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass, without leaving behind harmful residues or microplastics.

The eco-friendly sanitary napkin boasts a biodegradable absorbent core, plant-based top sheet fibers, and compostable leak-proof layers and packaging. Notably, it achieves high absorbency without the use of Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP), a common synthetic material. Testing under BIS IS 5405:2025 revealed an absorbency of 35 ml, surpassing the minimum standard of 30 ml. This launch is set to enhance HLL’s women’s healthcare portfolio, complementing its existing range of wellness products, including contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, and menstrual cups.

HLL officials emphasized that the introduction of Happy Days Earth aligns with the PSU’s strategy of merging public health initiatives with environmental sustainability efforts.
