ICC Chairman Jay Shah recently met with Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to talk about the state of cricket in Sri Lanka. The discussion focused on creating more opportunities for young players, enhancing grassroots and youth development programs, and using cricket to drive social and economic progress.
During the meeting, Shah expressed gratitude for the chance to meet President Dissanayake and emphasized Sri Lanka’s significant role in global cricket. They also talked about Sri Lanka’s hosting of major international events and its contribution to the sport’s worldwide growth. Shah looks forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to strengthen cricket and open up new prospects for future generations.
The meeting between Jay Shah and President Dissanayake occurred amid concerns within the ICC regarding the appointment of an interim committee to oversee Sri Lanka Cricket. Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister established this committee in April, replacing the previous executive committee. The ICC has raised objections to government involvement in national cricket boards, emphasizing the need for independence.
The interim committee’s aim was to implement reforms, such as drafting a new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket. Following President Dissanayake’s reported dissatisfaction with the administration, the executive committee, led by Shammi Silva, resigned. This situation has drawn attention to governance issues within Sri Lanka Cricket and its impact on international cricket regulations.
