The ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV) marked its 74th Foundation Day by hosting a science outreach program for school students in Pune. Scientists from ICMR-NIV, in collaboration with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), interacted with 1,180 students from classes 6-12. The students were exposed to virology concepts, viruses, insect specimens, and diagnostic tools to ignite their scientific curiosity.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director of ICMR-NIV, highlighted the institute’s achievements, ongoing research projects, and future vision during the event. Emphasizing the importance of basic virology, medical countermeasures, and pandemic readiness, he also mentioned the upcoming zonal NIVs focusing on outbreak investigations within their regions. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research, discussed the development of vaccines and medical countermeasures, stressing the significance of collaborations for India’s healthcare advancements.
Prof. Shekar C. Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), praised ICMR-NIV’s efforts in eradicating viral diseases and emphasized the necessity of collective efforts for a healthier future. Last year, the institute organized an Open School Day to inspire young minds, with 369 students and 36 teachers from various schools attending. The event showcased research themes like vector-borne diseases, respiratory infections, and zoonotic threats.
