The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organized India’s largest biomedical and technology transfer facilitation, transferring 41 public-health technologies to industry partners. The event marked the launch of the country’s first structured platforms dedicated to biomedical innovation and technology transfer under the ICMR Medical Innovation Patent Mitra initiative. This initiative aims to convert indigenous biomedical research into practical healthcare solutions through robust industry collaborations, as stated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Technologies transferred from ICMR institutes and innovators to industry partners include advanced diagnostics, vaccines, medical devices, and biomedical solutions addressing crucial public health needs. Notable technologies transferred encompass glycoconjugate and recombinant vaccines for Typhoid and Paratyphoid, along with diagnostic technologies for diseases like Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, and Mpox. Union MoS, Ayush and Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, emphasized the importance of connecting Indian science with industry to ensure that laboratory innovations translate into technologies that bolster public health and advance Viksit Bharat.
India’s transition from a health technology consumer to a global provider of affordable and innovative healthcare solutions is highlighted by strong industry partnerships and institutions like ICMR, according to Jadhav. Dr. Gobardhan Das, Member, NITI Aayog, expressed confidence in India’s scientific capabilities and innovation ecosystem to lead in health technologies globally. The Medical Innovation Patent Mitra is expected to play a vital role in safeguarding intellectual property, facilitating technology transfer, and expediting the journey of indigenous innovations from labs to society, Das added.
The event also saw the release of the ‘Indian Biomedical Patent Landscape Report’ and the ‘Technology Compendium’ to reinforce India’s biomedical innovation, intellectual property, and technology transfer ecosystem. Additionally, over 100 technologies in diagnostics, therapeutics, and medical devices developed by ICMR institutes, researchers, and startups were showcased, underlining India’s progress in the healthcare technology domain.
