World No. 2 Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open by defeating qualifier Maddison Inglis. This victory marks Swiatek’s 14th career Grand Slam quarterfinal and her third at the Australian Open. She dominated the match, winning 6-0, 6-3, dropping only three games in the process.
This was the first time Swiatek faced an Australian player at the Australian Open. Despite Inglis showing some resistance with strong serves and early points, Swiatek’s powerful baseline play proved to be too much for her opponent. Swiatek previously defeated Inglis on her home turf in the 2021 Adelaide second round.
Swiatek showcased her dominance by breaking serve to claim the opening set 6-0. Throughout the game, she displayed exceptional shot-making skills, including a remarkable backhand overhead winner from a defensive position. Despite Inglis’ efforts to fight back, Swiatek’s superior power and consistency secured her victory in straight sets.
In the upcoming quarterfinal, Swiatek will face No. 5 seed Elena Rybakina. Although Swiatek leads their head-to-head record 6-5, Rybakina emerged victorious in their only previous Australian Open encounter in the 2023 fourth round. Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, is now just three wins away from achieving a career Grand Slam.
