In a significant achievement, IIT Gandhinagar has created a hydrogel-based technology that could lead to advancements in simplifying surgery for colon-related tumors. This innovative technology utilizes biocompatible polymers to enable precise and controlled drug delivery, enhancing treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects. The hydrogel aids in the removal of colorectal polyps, potentially preventing cancer development.

Researcher Harshil Dave, from Mehsana, highlighted the unique “shear-thinning” property of the hydrogel he developed. This feature allows the substance to transition from a solid to a liquid state under pressure, making it easy for doctors to inject and create a cushion under the tumor during surgery. Unlike traditional methods using saline solution or dextrose, the hydrogel technology provides stable elevation of the tumor, streamlining the surgical process.

Mukesh Danka, an Assistant Professor at IIT Gandhinagar, supported Harshil’s research, emphasizing the use of plant-derived DGMS molecules in creating the nanofibrous hydrogel. Harshil’s work, recognized in an international journal, earned him the prestigious ‘Vikram Sarabhai Young Scientist Award 2026’. The technology has shown promising results in pre-clinical trials on large animals, paving the way for future clinical trials to expand its application in colon cancer treatment.
