Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule informed the Legislative Assembly about the widespread issue of illegal mining in the state and emphasized immediate shutdown measures. He disclosed plans for a comprehensive ETS mapping of all mines statewide to address the problem. The concern over unauthorized excavation of minor minerals in Raigad, Thane, and Palghar districts was highlighted by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu during a ‘Calling Attention’ motion.
Prabhu raised alarm over the lack of environmental clearances for excavation activities, leading to substantial government revenue losses. He criticized the temporary halts in operations post complaints, followed by swift resumptions. Minister Bawankule, in response, pointed out lapses in mining lease validations, absence of environmental approvals, and irregularities in mining zone planning and royalty collection. He expressed concerns over the hollowing of hills in Raigad, Thane, and Palghar, implicating influential figures.
The minister announced a comprehensive ETS mapping initiative to ascertain the extent of illegal mineral excavation, with a commitment to shut down all unauthorized mines post-mapping. Scrutiny of permissions granted in the last five years will be conducted, and corrective actions will be taken for any irregularities found. Bawankule emphasized the closure of mines lacking proper licenses, explosive department clearances, or environmental permissions, with District Collectors tasked to inspect and report on all mines within three days.
Amidst the discussions, allegations surfaced regarding illegal construction activities through hill excavation in Mumbai’s Chandivali area, with claims of complicity by traffic police. Minister Bawankule urged legislators to report such incidents for government intervention, emphasizing the collective responsibility to curb illegal activities. Congress MLA Nana Patole and others echoed the call for stringent actions against illegal mining, emphasizing the need to recover lost revenues and hold accountable officials aiding such practices.
