The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with the weather system expected to cause unsettled conditions in the state and Puducherry for at least a week. A trough from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal is affecting atmospheric conditions, leading to increased rainfall in various parts of Tamil Nadu. Particularly, heavy rainfall is warned in the hilly and nearby areas of Coimbatore district, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul districts today.
Authorities have cautioned residents in these regions to be vigilant, especially in vulnerable spots susceptible to waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions. The Nilgiris district, known for intense rainfall during such weather patterns, is expected to receive significant showers. Similar conditions are anticipated in the hilly regions of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul districts, where localized heavy downpours could impact daily life.
The weather department has also indicated that rainfall activity will escalate in additional districts on Friday. Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Tiruchy districts may experience strong rain accompanied by gusty winds. Similar weather conditions are forecast for Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.
Officials have mentioned that intermittent showers and changing weather patterns are expected to persist across many areas as the atmospheric system remains active in the upcoming days. The rainfall might bring relief from the prevailing summer heat in several interior districts, although some isolated areas could encounter strong winds and brief heavy rain spells.
Despite the rain activity in other parts of the state, Chennai is likely to face hot and humid conditions. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to be around 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities have advised the public to stay updated on weather forecasts and be cautious, especially in districts projected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds.
