The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of western Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Coimbatore and the Nilgiris are expected to experience intense showers due to a trough extending from southern Gujarat to Karnataka. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a weather bulletin stating that this weather system is likely to increase rainfall activity across various districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The IMD has mentioned that moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, may occur at one or two places in these regions on Thursday. The department has cautioned that heavy rainfall is expected at isolated spots in the hilly areas of Coimbatore district, the Nilgiris, and Theni district on Friday. Particularly, the Western Ghats region is anticipated to witness significant rainfall due to moist westerly winds and the prevailing weather conditions.
The forecast indicates that the weather will remain active on Saturday as well. Heavy rain is expected at isolated locations in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Kanniyakumari districts. Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas are advised to stay vigilant. Those residing in landslide-prone hill regions are urged to adhere to official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods.
Authorities will closely monitor the situation in affected districts, especially in hill stations and adjoining catchment areas, where heavy showers could lead to waterlogging, minor landslides, and disruptions to daily life. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds in isolated places across Tamil Nadu during the forecast period. Precautions are advised during thunderstorms, including avoiding sheltering under trees and staying indoors whenever possible.
Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies with chances of light to moderate rain in some areas. The maximum temperature in the city is forecasted to stay below 37 degrees Celsius, offering relief from the recent hot and humid weather. The Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the evolving weather conditions and provide further updates as necessary. Residents are urged to follow official forecasts and instructions from local authorities.
