The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu over the next few days. Heavy showers are anticipated in more than a dozen districts starting from June 28 due to the active Southwest Monsoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai mentioned that moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are likely in various parts of the state on Thursday.
Changes in the strength of westerly winds are expected to trigger moderate rainfall in the Western Ghats districts and coastal Tamil Nadu. Isolated places in these areas may experience moderate rain, with accompanying strong winds. Southern Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats region, and some northern interior districts are likely to receive moderate rain and gusty winds for the next two days.
Meteorologists have stated that the prevailing monsoon conditions are conducive to sustained rainfall across significant parts of Tamil Nadu. Starting from June 28, heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and others. Authorities have cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert as heavy rain could cause waterlogging and disruptions.
The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies for Chennai on Thursday. Light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is likely during the evening and night in some parts of the city and suburbs. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue in the upcoming days. Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to remain near normal until Sunday, offering relief from recent humid conditions.
Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea as squally weather with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is expected over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. Ocean current alerts have been issued for Karaikal and Nagapattinam coastal areas, with fishing communities urged to adhere strictly to advisories. In the last 24 hours until Thursday morning, Thammampatty in Salem district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 4 cm, followed by Veppanthattai in Perambalur district with 3 cm of rain.
