The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned about an upcoming heatwave in parts of Telangana for the next seven days. The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre predicts a gradual increase in temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days in the region. Expect some areas to witness temperatures surpassing 45 degrees Celsius from May 19 to May 24.
Heatwave conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets of various districts like Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, and Rajanna Sircilla on May 18. These areas might experience temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius. Notably, several districts in Telangana encountered heatwave conditions on the preceding Sunday.
The Telangana Development Planning Society reported a scorching 45.7 degrees Celsius in Bheemgal mandal, Nizamabad district, marking the highest temperature. Other areas like Dasturabad and Tanur in Nirmal district, as well as Kollur in Banswada mandal of Kamareddy district, also faced intense heat, recording temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. Across the state, 16 out of 33 districts registered temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius or higher, with an average maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius.
In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, the average maximum temperature stood at 40.4 degrees Celsius, with Goshamahal circle recording the highest at 42.3 degrees Celsius. In light of the IMD’s heatwave warning, the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, issued an advisory outlining precautions against heatwaves for the public. The government has also taken proactive steps by ensuring the availability of special beds, I.V fluids, essential medicines at health facilities, and distributing ORS sachets through healthcare workers to address any emergencies.
