The India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Imphal has issued a warning for thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall in all 16 districts of Manipur for the next five days. The Deputy Commissioner’s office in the mountainous Kaching district has released a public advisory due to rising water levels in the Imphal River and Sekmai River. District Magistrate Uppuluri Chaitanya highlighted the risk of flooding in low-lying areas of Kaching district from continuous rainfall and runoff.
Residents, especially those in vulnerable zones, are advised to stay alert, avoid riverbanks, and prepare for possible evacuation if conditions worsen. Authorities and local officials are instructed to ensure relief measures’ readiness, including safe shelters and emergency response teams. Citizens are urged to follow official updates closely and contact district control rooms during emergencies.
Quoting the IMD’s forecast, the District Magistrate mentioned persistent rainfall expected across the state and various district parts over the next five days, starting Saturday. Thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, and heavy rainfall are forecasted for Sunday (March 29) with an orange alert issued.
The public is advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and property. Scattered rain with thunderstorms is highly likely across the state on March 28, becoming fairly widespread on March 29 and 30, with many areas expecting rainfall. Districts like Imphal West, Imphal East, Senapati, Ukhrul, and Churachandpur are anticipated to experience higher rainfall activity initially.
Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease from March 31 onwards, but scattered thunderstorms are still likely in several districts, with isolated rainfall in parts of the valley districts, including Bishnupur, Thoubal, and surrounding areas, until April 3. The IMD classifies rainfall distribution as isolated, scattered, and fairly widespread, with a 60 to 70 percent probability for rainfall and thunderstorms.
Residents are advised to stay informed with official forecasts via the MAUSAM mobile application or by contacting the IMD Meteorological Centre in Imphal.
