As the United States celebrated its 250th independence anniversary, two immigrant members of Congress, one Republican and one Democrat, shared their stories on the significance of legal immigration for America’s identity and future. Republican Congressman Carlos Gimenez from Florida and Democratic Congressman Adriano Espaillat from New York, both naturalized citizens who came to the US as children, highlighted their experiences during a special Independence Day segment on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Gimenez recounted leaving Cuba with his family at the age of seven due to the rise of Fidel Castro’s communist regime. He emphasized his family’s pursuit of freedom and opportunities in a new land. Similarly, Espaillat, who immigrated from the Dominican Republic at nine, recalled the challenges of adapting to life in New York City during winter and learning English gradually.

Despite their differing political affiliations, both lawmakers stressed the importance of immigration reform post border security measures. Gimenez advocated for providing long-term migrants with stability and a path to legal status, emphasizing their contributions to the economy and society. Espaillat called for bipartisan efforts on issues like Dreamers, farm workers, and family unity, highlighting the strength of a united nation.

Both congressmen attributed their success to their families’ belief in America. They encouraged aspiring immigrants to follow legal channels, emphasizing the positive impact of immigration on the nation’s progress and diversity. Immigration, a contentious topic in US politics, continues to shape debates on border policies, asylum, and legal pathways, while immigrants play a vital role in America’s growth and cultural richness.
