The International Maritime Organization (IMO) strongly denounced an assault on a tanker close to the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in three seafarers going missing. The Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello caught fire after being hit by a projectile off the coast of Oman, as per the IMO’s statement. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that any action endangering seafarers’ lives and international shipping safety is unacceptable.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that US forces disabled the tanker in the Gulf of Oman by firing precision munitions into the vessel’s engine room. This action was taken after the crew failed to comply with American forces’ directives. Dominguez reiterated the importance of safeguarding seafarers, civilian shipping, and navigation freedom, emphasizing that all actions impacting international shipping must adhere to international law and safety regulations.
The IMO urged a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident’s circumstances. Notably, there have been 43 confirmed attacks on international shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz since February 28, 2026. India also condemned the attack on a commercial vessel off Oman, with three Indian crew members still missing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) denounced the assault, highlighting the need for de-escalation of tensions and diplomatic resolutions to restore peace and stability in the region.
