An Income Tax Department search operation is currently ongoing at the residence of Uma Shankar Singh, the sole Bahujan Samaj Party legislator in Uttar Pradesh. More than thirty officials, accompanied by a heavy police presence, arrived at his Lucknow home early in the morning. The tax authorities and security personnel’s presence has stirred activity in the area, with political reactions emerging due to the scrutiny of documents within the house.
The Income Tax team, along with local police, sealed the premises around 7 a.m., preventing entry and exit. Approximately 30 officials are examining documents related to financial transactions and property affairs. Despite the operation, the department has not released an official statement yet.
During the search, officials have started reviewing files, electronic devices, and other records found at the residence. The process is anticipated to last several hours, with security forces stationed outside the house and limited media access to the premises. Singh, the representative of Rasra in Ballia district, is reportedly undergoing cancer treatment, causing concern among his supporters.
Elected in 2022, Singh is the only BSP MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dinesh Pratap Singh criticized the search operation in a social media post. Notably, Uma Shankar Singh’s son is married to Dinesh Pratap Singh’s niece. The raid is ongoing, and further updates are awaited.
