India and Brazil recently held a bilateral meeting to enhance collaboration in telecommunications, digital infrastructure, and emerging technologies. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Brazilian counterpart Frederico de Siqueira Filho discussed various initiatives undertaken by India to expand digital infrastructure and ensure affordable connectivity. India’s achievement in offering some of the world’s lowest data tariffs was highlighted, along with the government’s commitment to providing diverse services for citizens to make informed choices.
The discussions emphasized the strategic partnership between the two countries, with a focus on digital connectivity as a crucial element for inclusive growth and technological sovereignty. As key members of the BRICS framework, India and Brazil stressed the importance of developing resilient and future-ready digital ecosystems. The Brazilian minister expressed interest in deepening cooperation in telecommunications and shared Brazil’s efforts in digital inclusion, including a significant investment program to deploy optical fiber cable in the Amazon region.
Scindia highlighted the progress of India’s BharatNet project, which aims to connect Gram Panchayats nationwide with substantial public investment. He also mentioned India’s initiatives like Aadhaar and UPI, which have led to a surge in mobile-based digital transactions. Additionally, Scindia underscored India’s focus on 5G innovation, including the establishment of 100 use case laboratories across the country to drive industry-academia collaboration and application-driven deployment. The Brazilian side showed interest in understanding India’s Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) operational framework, with Minister Scindia explaining its funding mechanism supporting rural connectivity projects.
