Indonesia plays a crucial role in India’s Act East Policy, as highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs during talks between Foreign Minister Sugiono of Indonesia and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The 8th India–Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting was co-chaired by the two ministers, where they discussed enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
Both ministers extensively reviewed the bilateral relations encompassing the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They explored avenues to bolster collaboration in political, defense, security, maritime, trade, investment, healthcare, digital, energy, connectivity, space, education, consular, and cultural domains, along with people-to-people exchanges. The discussions between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have injected fresh momentum into the bilateral ties.
The dialogue also touched upon regional and global developments of mutual interest, emphasizing the commitment to closer cooperation in regional and multilateral forums. Acknowledging the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, both sides agreed to convene the next Joint Commission Meeting in the near future at a mutually agreed date. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that Indonesia remains a pivotal partner in India’s Act East Policy, with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership witnessing growth across various cooperation areas.
Sugiono expressed anticipation for Prime Minister Modi’s forthcoming visit to Indonesia, underscoring the importance of the visit in deepening cooperation and delivering tangible benefits for both nations. The discussions during the 8th Indonesia–India Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi encompassed key priorities under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, ranging from trade and maritime security to digital connectivity, infrastructure, health, and people-to-people ties.
