Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that India and Kenya are committed to enhancing their enduring partnership, rooted in the aspirations of the Global South. This affirmation followed his meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto during the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, where India participated as a partner country.
PM Modi described the encounter as a positive one, stating that both countries are dedicated to collaborating for the welfare of their citizens. The historical and cultural bonds between India and Kenya, dating back to the pre-independence era, have been pivotal in shaping their relationship. The significant Indian diaspora in Kenya, numbering over 80,000, has also contributed to strengthening bilateral ties.
India and Kenya have cooperated extensively in various sectors such as trade, agriculture, education, defense, and healthcare. With bilateral trade surpassing USD 3 billion annually, Kenya stands as a crucial partner for India in Africa. The trade dynamics involve India exporting pharmaceuticals, machinery, and automobiles to Kenya, while importing tea, coffee, and leather products.
President William Ruto, who assumed office in 2022, has consistently emphasized the significance of South-South cooperation and has been proactive in deepening Kenya’s connections with India. The recent meeting between PM Modi and President Ruto aligns with the shared goal of amplifying the voice of the Global South in international platforms, especially concerning climate change, sustainable development, and fair trade practices.
Both leaders deliberated on avenues to expand collaboration in renewable energy, digital technologies, and food security. The discussion also touched upon mutual concerns regarding global economic fluctuations and the necessity for resilient supply chains. PM Modi’s statements underscore India’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Kenya, a key player in East Africa, with the meeting expected to pave the way for increased cooperation in line with the broader vision of India-Africa engagement within the Global South framework.
