A total of 15 ships destined for India, transporting fertilisers and raw materials, have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels include urea, DAP, and sulphur shipments, contributing to a significant boost in India’s fertiliser reserves. Among them, eight ships carry 3.32 lakh metric tonnes of urea, four ships transport 2.57 LMT of DAP, and three ships are laden with 1.11 LMT of sulphur.
Five additional vessels are en route to India, with one carrying ammonia and another transporting urea. Loading operations for urea are ongoing on two vessels, while sulphur is being loaded onto another. The scheduled arrival of these ships is expected to further enhance India’s fertiliser stocks, as per the official statement.
Following a temporary decline in natural gas supply to fertiliser plants, now fully restored to 100%, all urea plants in India are operating at maximum capacity. This restoration has led to a notable surge in domestic fertiliser production, aiding in meeting the country’s demand, the statement confirmed.
Despite disruptions in maritime traffic due to recent West Asia conflicts, the Indian government’s proactive measures ensured uninterrupted fertiliser availability. Through strategic planning and coordination, the government secured fertiliser supplies from various new sources, strengthening the nation’s fertiliser supply chain. Notably, 28 Indian Missions abroad played a pivotal role in facilitating contacts with potential producers and suppliers, supporting the Department of Fertilisers in ensuring timely fertiliser availability.
Supplies of urea have been secured from multiple countries, including Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, and others. Similarly, DAP and NPK fertilisers have been sourced through the Red Sea maritime route from countries like Russia, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia, among others. Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda highlighted the global disruptions in fertiliser supply chains due to the West Asia conflict, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring timely and affordable fertiliser access for Indian farmers under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
