India won the toss and chose to field first in the opening T20 match against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the young Indian player, will have to wait for his senior international debut as he is not in the playing XI. On the other side, Jai Moondra, an Indian-born cricketer, is making his debut for Ireland.
This series signifies a new chapter for India as Shreyas Iyer returns to the T20I setup after more than two years to lead the team. The batting lineup under his captaincy includes Kishan, vice-captain Tilak Varma, and other aggressive stroke-makers suited to India’s attacking style.
Facing a challenging situation, Ireland deals with multiple injuries as they prepare for the series. Captain Lorcan Tucker will lead a depleted squad missing key players like Paul Stirling, Mark Adair, Joshua Little, and Curtis Campher, while newcomers Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra have been called up.
India holds a strong historical advantage over Ireland, having won all eight previous completed T20 matches between the two teams. The visitors aim to maintain this record as they kick off a new era at Stormont.
India’s captain Shreyas Iyer, after winning the toss, stated, “Going to field first. It’s a new surface for us, first time in Belfast. Considering the conditions, the environment, and the wicket, I want to field first.” He emphasized the need for players to adapt quickly to the conditions and maintain a simple and relentless approach.
In response to a question about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Iyer mentioned, “Unfortunately, no (Vaibhav playing?). He’ll get his opportunity when the time comes. For now, we’re going with three genuine seamers, 1 allrounder.”
After losing the toss, Ireland’s captain Lorcan Tucker expressed, “Would’ve bowled. Looks like a really good pitch. It was a matter of transition. Stirlo led the last couple of years beautifully. Jai is making his debut today.”
