India voiced deep concern over recent attacks and rising tensions in West Asia, particularly targeting commercial shipping in international waterways. The surge in global crude oil prices, exceeding six percent, followed US President Donald Trump’s statement declaring the end of the ceasefire with Tehran. This announcement came after fresh American military strikes on Iran, heightening worries about energy supplies from the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, issued a statement emphasizing India’s apprehension regarding the escalating situation in West Asia. The recent incidents, including attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route, pose a threat to regional peace, security, and stability. India called on all parties to show restraint, de-escalate tensions, and ensure the safety of civilians, as well as the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies and trade.
Following Trump’s warning to Iran about potential military actions and the possibility of reimposing a naval blockade, international oil benchmark Brent crude surged by over 6.5 percent. Trump, during discussions at the NATO summit, defended the recent US military actions against Iran. He accused Tehran of violating a requested pause for funeral ceremonies and suggested a breakdown in the current diplomatic framework. The US President indicated readiness for further military strikes if Iran continued its aggressive actions, despite leaving room for diplomatic engagement.
