Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated India’s inaugural hydrogen-powered passenger train journey from Jind, Haryana, emphasizing a move towards cleaner and sustainable rail transport. Loco pilot Chandrakant Kumar highlighted the train’s unique features, noting its eco-friendly operation without carbon emissions. The hydrogen-powered train, distinct from diesel or electric trains, operates by utilizing hydrogen extracted from water.
Kumar mentioned that the train’s operating staff received specialized training in Chennai before commencing operations. He emphasized the train’s advanced safety mechanisms designed to ensure secure operations, with automatic safety systems integrated throughout. Additionally, Kumar specified that the train’s speed capabilities reach 110 kmph, but it will run at 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat route due to speed restrictions.
The launch of the hydrogen-powered train signifies India’s entry into a select group of nations exploring hydrogen technology for cleaner rail travel. The project underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to innovation, energy efficiency, and environmentally sustainable transportation, aligning with India’s clean energy objectives and net-zero carbon emission targets. The Jind-Sonipat route has been chosen as the pilot route for hydrogen train operations, featuring an indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility in Jind.
