India celebrated the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July 2026, honoring the historic victory in 1999 when Indian soldiers regained control of the heights of Kargil. The conflict arose in May 1999 when Pakistani forces infiltrated across the Line of Control, aiming to cut off Kashmir from Ladakh and isolate troops on the Siachen Glacier. India responded with Operation Vijay, including the Indian Air Force’s “Safed Sagar” operation and naval deployment, following a strategy of contain, evict, and deny without crossing the LoC.

Key battles marked the campaign, with significant victories at Tololing, Point 4590, Tiger Hill, Point 4875, Batalik, Mushkoh Valley, and Kaksar. After over two months of intense combat in harsh terrain above 5,000 meters, all occupied positions were reclaimed by Indian forces. The exceptional gallantry displayed led to numerous awards, including Param Vir Chakras, Maha Vir Chakras, Vir Chakras, and other medals, honoring heroes like Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav and Captain Vikram Batra.

The conflict was a pivotal moment for India’s defense establishment, leading to the creation of the Department of Military Affairs under the Chief of Defence Staff to enhance jointmanship. Notably, General Bipin Rawat became the first CDS in 2020, succeeded by General N.S. Raja Subramani. The defense sector saw significant growth, with increased foreign direct investment and a rise in defense allocation and production, indicating a shift towards self-reliance and indigenization.
