The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, described as one of the highest-quality trade deals by both countries, is expected to enhance cooperation across various sectors. New Zealand Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay emphasized that this agreement will facilitate the establishment of enduring relationships between companies in both nations, fostering collaboration in technology, science, and culture.
McClay highlighted the significance of the FTA, stating that it will not only drive two-way trade growth but also strengthen bonds in areas such as science, culture, sports, and people-to-people interactions. He expressed optimism about the rapid expansion of cooperation beyond trade, encompassing diverse fields like science, cultural exchanges, and sports.
The upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to New Zealand holds special importance as it marks the first such visit in 40 years. This visit follows closely on the heels of the signing of the landmark trade agreement, signifying a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two nations. The visit is anticipated to be a momentous occasion, with celebrations planned in New Zealand’s largest city to welcome Prime Minister Modi and the Indian-New Zealand community.
McClay also acknowledged the significant presence of the Indian community in New Zealand, expecting a strong turnout to greet Prime Minister Modi during his visit. Regarding the potential adoption of Indian digital technologies like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in New Zealand, McClay expressed confidence in the compatibility of such innovations with the existing regulatory framework. He emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure in modernizing the economy and highlighted the role of the FTA in facilitating this transition.
