External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo to convey Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support following Cyclone Ditwah. They jointly inaugurated a 120-foot Bailey Bridge in the Kilinochchi District, airlifted from India as part of Operation Sagar Bandhu. India also announced a $450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka, focusing on infrastructure, housing, and healthcare support.

Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to Sri Lanka, citing historical ties and mutual cooperation frameworks like Neighbourhood First and Vision MAHASAGAR. His visit underscores India’s proactive stance in assisting Sri Lanka during crises, as seen through Operation Sagar Bandhu’s relief efforts post-Cyclone Ditwah. India’s ongoing aid includes delivering supplies to flood-affected areas and facilitating critical infrastructure restoration projects.

In a statement, the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka highlighted the progress in restoring road connectivity, particularly in areas like Chilaw and Kilinochchi. Efforts include clearing damaged bridges and installing Bailey Bridges to enhance regional access and mobility. India’s consistent support to Sri Lanka reflects a strong bilateral partnership focused on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
