India is becoming a prominent center for ‘Medical Value Travel’ (MVT), with the medical tourism market projected to rise from $8.7 billion in 2025 to $16.2 billion by 2030, as per government reports. The global MVT market, currently valued at around $115.6 billion in 2022, is anticipated to reach approximately $286.1 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual rate of about 10.8 percent.
The surge in India’s MVT sector is attributed to the fusion of modern medical facilities with traditional wellness practices like AYUSH. Key factors propelling this growth include robust policy backing, digital advancements, and initiatives like AYUSH Visa and Regional Medical Hubs, which are fortifying the overall ecosystem.
India’s MVT landscape encompasses medical tourism for treatments and wellness tourism focusing on AYUSH systems such as Yoga and Ayurveda. These dual aspects cater to both advanced medical needs and the increasing global preference for preventive healthcare, the statement highlighted.
In 2025, India welcomed 9.15 million foreign tourists, out of which 5,07,244 arrived for medical purposes, constituting about 5.5 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals. Bangladesh, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Somalia, Turkmenistan, Oman, and Kenya were the top source countries for medical tourists visiting India in 2025.
As per the Medical Tourism Index 2020–21, India secured the 10th spot among the top 46 medical tourism destinations worldwide and ranked fifth among the top 10 wellness destinations in the Asia-Pacific region. India’s healthcare system is underpinned by strong quality assurance measures and globally recognized accreditation standards.
Hospitals and healthcare providers in India adhere to stringent benchmarks for patient safety and care quality, obtaining accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). Looking forward, the government’s vision includes establishing five Regional Medical Hubs in the Union Budget 2026–27, featuring integrated medical, educational, and research facilities, alongside AYUSH centers and MVT facilitation centers.
